Canterbury Bells Gloxinia is a somewhat fleshy,
perennial plant, producing a clump of red-mottled stems up to 1 m tall,
occasionally up to 2 m, from an underground rhizome. It has a
raceme-like flowering stem. The flowers are showy, bell-shaped,
nodding, pale purple or violet-lavender, mint-scented, about 4 cm long.
The leaves are opposite, hairless and veined. Fruits are ovoid to
elliptical capsules, containing numerous minute seeds. Canterbury Bells
Gloxinia is native to Trinidad, Costa Rica to N. Bolivia and Brazil,
widely cultivated and naturalized in many parts of the Tropical world.
